Scalp Micropigmentation
What is scalp micropigmentation?
-
Scalp Micropigmentation is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that uses a pen-like tattoo machine to "create micro-dotted impressions on the scalp that mimic hair follicles
Does scalp micropigmentation work if you already have hair?
-
The short answer is definitely.
-
There is a range of options depending on the pattern of hair loss.
-
Those with a thinning head of hair can have follicles tattooed onto areas where there is still hair growth to create the appearance of lush volume

What is the process?
-
Once in the chair, be prepared to sit still for a while.
-
Depending on the size of the area being worked on, each session can take anywhere from one to five hours
-
To complete SMP, two to three sessions are usually needed.
-
The first plays out like this: the SMP artist matches the ink to the color of your existing follicles and skin tone.
-
In the initial session, we typically use a lighter shade and tattoo with enough space in between each impression in order to see how the scalp ultimately heals Then a pen-style tattoo machine embeds the ink into the scalp.
-
During the follow-up sessions we perfect the look by filling in more detail and going one or two shades darker if necessary to create the appearance of three-dimensional hairs.
-
There's also a healing time around 10 days in between each one to prevent ink migration and over saturation

SMP Advantages:
-
Creates a new hairline for receding hair
-
Disguises alopecia
-
Camouflages scars (including hair transplant scars)
-
Creates thicker and fuller looking hair for females
-
Adds density for longer, thinning hair for males, including those who have had hair transplants previously too

-
Can I wear makeup after permanent makeup? No makeup is to be applied for 7 days after the procedure on the tattoo area. After any eyeliner procedure, use new mascara after the first 7 days DO NOT PICK, PEEL, OR SCRATCH the treated area, or your color may heal unevenly and you risk scarring and infection.
-
Does permanent makeup have side effects?Short-term side effects of permanent makeup may include swelling, tenderness, and occasional bruising. However, certain areas of the face are more prone to side effects than others.
-
Are there any products I can use to help with the healing? You will be given a sterile Vitamin A&E cream sachet which you should apply twice daily (eyebrows and lip treatments only) this will help with the healing process. For eyeliner and Eyelash enhancement treatments the area should be cleansed gently with warm water and a clean cotton bud.
-
What do I need to know before getting permanent makeup?Refrain from any skin treatments i.e. facials and skin care treatments i.e. lightening, resurfacing, anti-aging, anti-acne type products for at least 2 weeks prior to your appointment. Skin treatments will interfere with the healing process of your permanent makeup and may cause unpredictable results.
-

All necessary safety measures should be taken to ensure the client's health and wellbeing throughout the process. As with any cosmetic procedure, it is important to do your research and find a good artist who you like.
-
What to expect when you get permanent makeup?Following the procedure, expect your color to be sharper, darker, and bolder than the final result. Once you have healed fully, the pigment will look softer and about 20-30% lighter. The darkest days are typically 2-4. Expect to see redness and slight swelling both in and around the brow/lips/eyelids area.
-
How often do you have to retouch permanent makeup? The results from your initial permanent makeup procedure will generally last 1.5-3 years with minimal fading. We recommend that you schedule this appointment once you notice that your PMU is beginning to fade, or some areas begin to appear lighter than others.
-
How long does the procedure take?Procedures take between 1 1/2 – 2 hrs, this includes drawing on time for the initial procedure where the eyebrows or lips will be drawn on and the procedure will not be started until myself and the client are happy with the shape and style. I always say to allow yourself 2.5 hrs in total.
-
What not to do before permanent makeup?Avoid alcohol and caffeine 1 day before procedure to minimize any oozing, bleeding or swelling. Do not take coumadin, aspirin, ibuprofen, niacin, 1 day prior to procedure.
-
How can I make my permanent makeup last longer?I will recommend: 1. Always using sunscreen, as sunlight will cause your semi permanent makeup fading 2. Avoid using anti-aging creams in the area, especially the one containing retinol! as they can affect the color 3. Avoid certain skin treatments in the area, such as chemical peels, facial scrubs, laser rejuvenation, microdermabrasion and others.
-
What are the pigments made of and are they safe? All pigments are made of natural minerals and are selected for the safe, non toxic, hypoallergenic properties. I have collagen lip fillers/botox injections, can I still have a Permanent Makeup treatment? Yes, however we recommend you wait at least 4 weeks after lip fillers and 2 weeks after botox to settle, ideally it would be best to have your permanent makeup treatment first.

Who should avoid permanent makeup? The risk of developing an infection is higher in people with compromised immune system. Eczema, dermatitis, rosacea, psoriasis or any one of these skin conditions may compromise the surface and texture of the skin. Procedure performed on skin with these type of condition may have sub par results.
-
Does SMP look natural?Scalp micropigmentation is becoming more and more popular due to its natural and undetectable results. Each hairline design, hairline finish and follicle replication is customised according to our bespoke hairline design technique. I will match perfectly the shade based on your existing hair colour and skin tone so you do not need to worry about it. Check out our gallery for examples of my work.
-
How long does SMP treatment take?On average it takes 2 – 4 hours per session. Usually 2/3 sessions in total. First session is longer is the BASE, while second session is when we apply the density which often takes around 30 mins longer due to larger amount of micro dots that need to be implanted.
-
Do I have to cut my hair short prior to a SMP application?Yes and no. If your baldness is extensive then is more likely that you will need to shave it short to maintain the most natural results possible. If you are thinning and we can work with your existing hair then there is no need to shave it as we will add density or make your profiles more defined without the need to shave it off. I will advise based on pictures or in person consultation.
-
Does SMP hurt? Most clients say no it doesn’t hurt but it is rather a little discomfort until your skin gets used to the feeling. You cannot compare it to conventional tattoos as we are working superficially as skin on the head is thin overall. We will also advise you on pre treatment protocol during our consultation to make sure you will have a pleasant experience with best possible results.
-
Is SMP permanent? For the majority of clients, the results last for 3-5 years depending on your skin and your lifestyle. I recommend coming back for a top up session every 12-18 months to keep the colour and density looking fresh. However on some rare occasions, the pigment can be rejected from the skin at a much higher rate which causes faster fading. This again depends very much on your skin. Our skin is a living organ and pigment fade over time due to excessive sweating, sun exposure, medication and many other factors.
-
Do I need time off after my SMP treatment? No you do not. Scalp micropigmentation is non invasive with no downtime. Depending on your skin condition, redness may last up to 48h but you still can continue with your daily routine. I will provide you with detailed after care instructions to follow so you can get the best results.
-
What about aftercare? It is very important that you take the proper steps in the aftercare regime before enjoying the outcome of your scalp pigmentation treatment. Failing to do so can minimise the effectiveness of your results. For the first 5 days after the scalp pigmentation procedure, there are several steps you should take care in following. Ensure to avoid: Touching your scalp (unless absolutely necessary) Washing your scalp Exposing your head to any sunlight Sweating Shaving your scalp Swimming After the first 5days, your scalp will have begun to heal and adjust to its new pigmentation. Wash your scalp daily, with water only or baby shampoo Shave your head gently Apply sunscreen with at least SPF30 to your head, if you go into bright and direct sunlight Wear a swimming cap when you swim Do not itch, pick, or scratch your scalp
-
Can SMP be performed if I have grey hair?Yes. If your hair goes grey you can still fully benefit from scalp micropigmentation. The base of the hair is always darker than actual hair so if you will keep it short your hair will appear darker. I also use pigment shade selection to match your existing hair colour, so you will get the most natural results possible.
